Mandolin, bodhran & banjo
Steve Matthews was a founding member, back in 1993, with "Big" Steve White after their previous bands Frayed Knot and Devil's Rant evolved into what was to become Hedgepig. Ironically, after achieving the rock sound they were searching for, he felt the call of Scotland and moved away in June 1997 with just the occasional odd appearance to keep his memory alive.
Fortunately, after 5 years away, he returned to England (Oxfordshire), enabling him to help the band through their transitional 2004/5 period when the line up was rather unstable. This has led to him playing so often with the band that he is now much more than a 'special guest'. When unavailable he is sorely missed – his ability to learn mandolin tunes via royal mail and email is extremely impressive and his wah-wah pedal is a pretty funky asset.
Steve is a dedicated follower of live music and his favourite folk bands include The Oysterband; The Horslips; 1969-1971 Fairport Convention; 1969-1971 Steeleye Span; Martin Carthy; Seth Lakeman; The Men They Couldn't Hang (the first time around); Wolfstone (when Ivan Drever was in the band); as well as Jethro Tull, Family, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple (no, really!).
